Expert Advice On Buying Antiques and Gardening
The 34th annual Chattanooga Antiques show wrapped up Sunday at the Choo Choo.
The event benefits the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts in the Bluff View Arts District.
Exhibitors from across the country come to sell their finest antiques at the high end show. Experts say if you're new to antique shopping you must first take time to train your eye, stay focused, and document your purchase. Many dealers offer a guarantee when you buy.
Joan Datesman of Merry Walk Antiques, "If I tell you that this piece is from a certain region in France and it's one hundred years old, it is. So you're not going to ever get bargain bargains the way you might in your neighbors flea market but at least you have the advantage of knowing you've put your money some place safe."
Another rule of thumb, don't buy something if your agonizing about how to pay for it.
If you enjoy gardening perhaps you visted the 7th annual Down to Earth Lawn and Garden show held at Camp Jordan.
Expert gardeners say this year many people are interested in drought tolerant plants.
But don't let the sunny weather fool you, master gardeners say if you're eager to plant something it's best to wait until late April.
Master Gardener Sue Henley, "Chattanooga is a big challenge, we have wonderful weather we can grow almost anything here but we still have to watch for those late freezes and of course whether we get enough rain in the summer."
The event raised money for the Speech and Hearing Center and other local charities.
